What is a controversial law that I can write a research paper on?

For my English class I have to write a research paper on a controversial law. I would prefer a law that other students haven't written about over and over such as drinking laws, abortion laws, and others like those. It would also be helpful if you could give me a specific law. How about Blue Laws? Those are laws that prohibit certain activities or businesses from being conducted on a Sunday. Specifically down here in SC, stores cannot sell alcohol on Sundays and for a long time, many stores like clothing stores, bookstores, etc. could not be even open. Now some counties can allow stores to open (no alcohol though) and there is a call in Columbia South Carolina, in Richland County and Lexington County (name is the mall is Columbiana Mall) where half of the mall is in Richland County and half is in Lexington County. Because the counties have different rules about stores opening on Sundays, half of the mall can open at noon and the other half has to wait until 1:30.



Another controversial law might be the law in South Carolina (I am a SC attorney so I know these laws the best) that someone who is convicted of minor in possession of alcohol or of possession of marijuana loses their right to drive regardless of whether or not they were in a vehicle at the time of arrest. So if you are 17 and in someone's yard (or even 20 since it is a drinking age of 21) and have a cup of beer in your hand and there are no cars within a mile of you, when you are caught you still lose your right to drive. Since driving is a privilege and not a right, they are allowed to do that but it could certainly be debated as controversial.



There are also the common law marraige laws, the laws that allow an underage pregnant girl to get married without consent but of course she could not have had sex legally so it is left to the imagination how she got pregnant, the law that you must sound your horn when passing another car or the law that all real estate closings must involve an attorney and cannot be done by a title company.
